Responsible gambling: help lines, limits and self-exclusion
If betting has stopped being entertainment, help is free and confidential.
Where to get help now
- 1-800-GAMBLER — the national problem gambling helpline. Call 1-800-426-2537. Free, confidential, 24 hours, with text and chat as well as voice.
- National Council on Problem Gambling — ncpgambling.org, with a chat service and a state-by-state directory of treatment providers.
- Gamblers Anonymous — gamblersanonymous.org, for meetings, in person and online.
- 988 — the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, if the situation is worse than money. Call or text 988.
None of these is run by a sportsbook and none of them bills you. The helpline in particular is worth using earlier than most people do. It is not reserved for a crisis, and the person who answers it has spoken to a great many people who were only starting to wonder whether something had shifted.
Self-exclusion, and what it actually covers
Every state that has legalised online sports betting runs a voluntary self-exclusion register, administered by whichever body licenses operators there. Joining it is a single action with a wide effect: instead of closing one account at one book, you are removed from every operator that state licenses, at once.
In practice that means three things happen together. Existing accounts are closed or frozen. Marketing stops, which matters more than it sounds, because a promotional email on the wrong evening is a real event. And a fresh signup using the same identity is refused, so the decision survives a change of mind at two in the morning.
Terms are usually offered as a short period, a long one, or permanently. Whichever you pick, removal at the end is normally an application, not an expiry, so nothing quietly switches itself back on. That asymmetry is deliberate. It is much easier to talk yourself into betting again than to sit down and file a form about it.
The limit of the tool is worth stating plainly, because people discover it at the worst moment. A register belongs to one regulator, so it reaches the operators that regulator licenses and nothing else. It does not cover a book licensed in the next state, and it does not cover offshore sites, which are outside the system entirely. Anyone who has excluded themselves and then found an offshore site still open to them has not failed at anything. They have run into the edge of a state-level tool.
Your state regulator publishes how to join, and the national helpline can tell you which body that is in your state if the answer is not obvious. Some states accept enrolment online; others require it in person or notarised.
The limits that sit inside the account
Short of self-exclusion, every licensed operator carries the same set of controls, because regulators require them; books did not think of them. Deposit limits cap what goes in over a day, a week or a month. Wager and loss limits cap what is staked or lost over the same periods. Session timers close the app after a set time. A cool-off suspends the account for days or weeks without the finality of exclusion.
The important detail is the timing, not the list. A limit set in advance is a decision made by someone who is not currently losing. A limit you go looking for during a bad run is being set by someone who is, and that person will pick a higher number. Most operators know this and apply a decrease immediately while delaying an increase, which is a rare case of the friction pointing the right way.
Set them when you open the account, before there is anything to react to. If that moment has passed, set them on a day when nothing much has happened.
Signs worth taking seriously
Betting more than intended, or more often than intended. Chasing losses with larger stakes to get level. Borrowing to bet. Hiding how much has been bet, or being vague about it when asked directly. Betting to change how you feel, not because a game is on. Time or money going into it at the expense of work, sleep, or the people around you.
One of those is the arithmetic on this site and the rest are not. A calculator can show that the margin built into a price makes a long-run profit improbable, and that is a genuinely useful thing to see written down. It has nothing to say about why someone keeps betting after they have understood it. That gap is exactly what the numbers at the top of this page are for.
If it is someone else
The same helpline takes calls from partners, parents and friends, and a large share of what it does is talk to people who are not the ones betting. You do not need the full picture before you call, and you do not need to have decided what you want to happen next.
Covering a debt is the instinct and it is worth thinking about carefully, because paying off a balance without anything else changing tends to reset the clock rather than stop it. The people on the other end of that number have watched the pattern many times and can say more about it than a page can.
The scope of this site
This is a set of calculators. It returns arithmetic on the numbers you enter, publishes the formula behind each one on the methodology page, and is written for people aged 21 and over in places where online sports betting is legal. Availability varies by state, and so does the legal age in a small number of them.
The site carries commercial links, which is disclosed on the affiliate disclosure page and on every page that carries one. That is a reason to read the ranking method instead of the ranking, and it is also a reason this page exists in the form it does.
Questions about limits and self-exclusion
5 questions
01 What does self-exclusion actually block?
Every operator licensed by the state that runs the register. Your account is closed or frozen, you are removed from that operator’s marketing, and a new signup with the same identity is refused. It does not reach operators licensed elsewhere, offshore sites, or a book in a neighbouring state, because the register belongs to one regulator.
02 Can I undo a self-exclusion early?
Usually not. That is the point of it. Terms are commonly offered as one year, five years or lifetime, and the short ones typically end only when you apply for removal after the term has run. A choice you cannot reverse on a bad evening is a stronger tool than one you can.
03 Do deposit limits work if I set them mid-session?
Far less well. Many operators apply a decrease immediately but delay an increase by a cooling-off period, precisely because the moment you want a higher limit is the moment it should be hardest to get. A limit chosen before you sit down is doing the work it was designed for.
04 Is there a number to call that is not run by a sportsbook?
Yes. 1-800-GAMBLER is the national helpline operated by the National Council on Problem Gambling, an independent non-profit. It is free, confidential, answered at any hour, and reachable by text and chat as well as by phone. You do not need to have a diagnosis or a crisis to use it.
05 Does understanding the maths reduce the risk?
It helps with one thing and not with the rest. Knowing the hold on a market tells you what the price costs and makes a long-run profit look as unlikely as it is. It has no effect on the reasons people keep betting after they already know that, which is what the helplines and the registers are for.
